AFRIBALL made a powerful and unforgettable debut on Saturday, 30th May 2026, at the iconic Assembly Rooms, Newcastle, marking its maiden edition as a bold new cultural platform celebrating African excellence, creativity, and influence across the UK.
Held under the theme “Culturally Loud,” the inaugural event brought together distinguished leaders, innovators, and creatives from across the country in a landmark evening that has now set a new standard for cultural recognition and celebration.
Historic Recognition of Excellence
A defining highlight of the evening saw Dame Chi Onwurah, Dr King Smade, and Dr Rex Tonye Idaminabo honoured with the AFRIBALL Lifetime Achievement Awards, in recognition of their outstanding contributions to leadership, culture, and community impact.
Delivering the keynote address, Dame Chi Onwurah inspired attendees with reflections on representation, progress, and the importance of shaping a collective future.
A Vision for a Shared Cultural Future
In a powerful address, AFRIBALL Founder, Teinye Boyle, set the tone for the movement AFRIBALL seeks to build, urging a shift in cultural conversations:
“The conversation of today should not be about whose Jollof is better, but what we are creating as a shared identity.”
He further challenged the status quo, stating:
“Being the first Black person to do anything is no longer a flex. We need to stop asking who did it first, but who’s doing it next.”
His remarks underscored AFRIBALL’s mission to move beyond symbolic wins toward legacy, collaboration, and future impact.

The event also featured the Creators Awards segment, hosted by Reedah Yvonne, which celebrated excellence in digital creativity.
