Multiple award-winning poet and writer Tolu A. Akinyemi has released the official video for his poem “Mortality,” a deeply moving personal meditation on the inevitability of death and the quiet, unsettling beauty of accepting it.
Originally published in his chapbook Voyage, “Mortality” opens with a line that immediately disarms and draws in the listener:
“I have fallen in love with my mortality.”
With this line, Akinyemi surrenders to his humanity and distills the universal truth that no matter how vivid our stories, they will one day end. So rather than dwelling in despair, the poem invites reflection, asking gently: how do we live meaningfully? How do we die with grace? Where is home, for our bones?
The video, produced and directed by Benson Omoruyi, transforms the poem into a visual experience that lingers long after it ends. Minimalist and evocative, it mirrors the tone of the poem, compelling viewers to pause and consider their own endings.
